Painted on mirror with a wooden frame which I found in a building that was to be demolished. I cleaned the mirror and gave the wooden frame a sand and Danish oil.
The effects on the poppies result from the water-based and oil-based paints not mixing. The painting shows red poppies and cornflowers within a background of gold, brown and cream. A typical English field you might think. On close inspection the poppies are bleeding. I was reading a book about the effect of geology on the battlefields of WWI at the same time as the mainstream media and the politicians were attempting to turn the English against Europeans and immigrants in general in the name of Brexit. Yes call me naïve, but images of poppies bleeding came to my mind.
The painting was photographed outside so the sky is reflected on the part of the mirror which has not been painted.
